AutoLingo for BMW vs a generic OBD2 scanner
Generic OBD2 apps and store-bought code readers (Torque, OBD Fusion, OBD Auto Doctor and many others) speak OBD2, the standard every car sold in the US since 1996 has to support. OBD2 only covers emissions: the engine, and the transmission where it affects emissions. That's a fraction of a BMW's modules: on the 2008 X3 we test with, it's 2 of the 17 that AutoLingo for BMW talks to.
So a generic reader won't show an airbag, ABS or stability-control fault, a lighting or body module fault, or anything in the instrument cluster, and it can't reset the service reminders. AutoLingo for BMW uses BMW's own diagnostic protocols, the language BMW's dealer tools speak.
| AutoLingo for BMW | Generic OBD2 apps | |

| Live data | From the engine and other modules | The standard engine values |
| Emissions readiness | Yes, with BMW's drive cycle to get it ready | Yes |
| Service functions and coding | Service reminder resets, battery replacement and more on confirmed models; E-chassis coding | No |

Choose Generic OBD2 apps if
- You only need to read a check-engine light, on cars of many brands.
Choose AutoLingo for BMW if
- You drive a BMW and want to see every warning light's cause, not just the check-engine light.
