Register a new battery in your BMW
A BMW with an intelligent battery sensor manages its battery's charging itself, and it has to know when a new battery goes in: registering it tells the charging system to start over with a fresh battery instead of charging it like the worn-out one. Without that, a new battery can be charged wrongly and wear out early.
If the new battery is a different type or capacity (AGM instead of standard, or more Ah), the car also has to be coded for it. AutoLingo for BMW does both in one go: it updates the car's vehicle order and battery coding to match the new battery, then registers it.
Which BMWs
BMWs with an intelligent battery sensor whose engine module registers the battery, most BMWs from the mid-2000s on; the coding where the CAS keeps the battery type (the app offers the registration on its own where it doesn't). It changes the car, so it runs on the cars we've confirmed it on (below); on others the app shows it as Coming until we have. Changing to a different battery type or capacity runs only where we've confirmed that too.
Confirmed on a real car: BMW 3 Series (E90) (October 2026)
Service jobs that change the car come to each BMW once we've confirmed them on a real car like it; until then the app shows them as Coming. Every update is free.
Before you start
- The new battery fitted, and its label to hand: its capacity (Ah) and whether it's AGM or a standard (flooded) battery.
- Engine off and the ignition fully on: press Start once without your foot on the brake, so the dashboard lights up fully. In accessory mode the modules refuse these changes.
- A battery charger connected if you have one: the ignition stays on for a few minutes.
- The AutoLingo for BMW adapter plugged in and connected.
Step by step
- Open the Service tab. Under “Battery replacement”, tap Start next to “Battery replacement”.
- The app reads which battery the car is coded for and shows it under “Currently coded for”, for example “90 Ah AGM”.
- Answer “Are you fitting a different battery?”: “Yes, a different capacity or type”, or “No, the same battery” to only register it.
- For a different battery, choose the one you've fitted from the list (match the capacity and type on its label) and tap “Code … & register”.
- The app checks the ignition and the battery, then asks you to confirm. Tap “Code & register” (“Register” for the same battery).
- Wait while the app updates the vehicle order, writes the coding and registers the battery. Keep the ignition on and the adapter connected.
- When it's done, the app shows “✓ Battery replacement complete” with what changed: the vehicle order, the coding and the registration.
Good to know
- Only register a battery you've really replaced: registering again tells the car a worn battery is new, which shortens its life. The app warns you when the battery was registered recently.
- If the app asks you to, switch the ignition off and lock the car for a few minutes so the change takes effect.
- If a step fails, the app says which, puts back what it had changed (the vehicle order) and tells you what wasn't done.
- Check the new battery any time with the battery health check.
