BMW steering angle sensor fault codes

The 16 fault codes the steering angle sensor can store, and what each one means. Some codes mean different things in different versions of the module; tap a code to see which applies to your car.

On: 3 Series (E36), Z3 (E36/7), 7 Series (E38), 5 Series (E39), 3 Series (E46), Z8 (E52), X5 (E53), X3 (E83), Z4 (E85), Z4 (E86)

  • 0001 LWS: Supply (terminal 30)
  • 0002 LWS: Sensor current outside tolerance
  • 0003 LWS: Slider fault (normal operation)
  • 0004 LWS: Slider fault (calibration operation)
  • 0005 LWS: Internal fault (EEPROM)
  • 0006 LWS: Internal fault (A/D converter)
  • 0007 LWS: Internal fault (ROM)
  • 0008 LWS: Internal fault (RAM)
  • 0009 No ASC2 message
  • 000A LWS: CAN version incorrect
  • 000B LWS: Sensor/vehicle allocation incorrect or not available
  • 000C LWS: CAN-bus communication fault
  • 000D LWS: Steering speed implausible
  • 000E LWS: Steering angle implausible
  • 000F LWS: Internal fault
  • 0010 watchdog
