BMW engine electronics fault codes

The 421 fault codes the engine electronics can store, and what each one means. Some codes mean different things in different versions of the module; tap a code to see which applies to your car.

On: 7 Series (E38)

  • 2128 DME: Pedal-position sensor 2 - input high (DK/PWG Position Sensor/Switch E Channel High Input)
  • 2138 DME: Pedal-position sensors 1 and 2 - measuring-range or power-output problem (DK/PWG Position Sensor/Switch D/E Voltage Change Relationship)
  • 2270 DME: Oxygen sensor (bank 1, behind catalytic converter) - input low
  • 2271 DME: Oxygen sensor (bank 1, behind catalytic converter) - input high
  • 2299 DME: Accelerator pedal position/brake, plausibility fault
  • 2300 DME: Ignition coil 1, primary/secondary circuit - input low (primary control)
  • 2301 DME: Ignition coil 1, primary/secondary winding - malfunction (primary control circuit high)
  • 2303 DME: Ignition coil 2, primary/secondary circuit - input low (primary control circuit high)
  • 2304 DME: Ignition coil 2, primary/secondary winding - malfunction (primary control circuit low)
  • 2400 DME: Leakage diagnosis pump - open circuit (EVAP system leak diagnostic pump channel open)
  • 2401 DME: Leakage diagnosis pump - signal low (EVAP system leak diagnostic pump control circuit)
  • 2402 DME: Leakage diagnosis pump - signal high (EVAP system leak diagnostic pump control circuit)
  • 2404 DME: Leakage diagnosis pump - measuring-range or power-output problem (EVAP system leak diagnostic pump sensor channel range/performance)
  • 2801 DDE: Power supply
  • 3006 DDE: Terminal 15
  • 316A DME: Temperature signal of electric fan too high
  • 316B DME: The temperature signal of the electric fan remains below the switch-on temperature
  • 3511 DDE: DDE main relay
  • 3551 DDE: Exhaust-gas recirculation (EGR) 2
  • 3590 DDE: Exhaust-gas recirculation (EGR) 1
  • 3595 DDE: Brake light/brake test switch
